Josephine "Jo" Mary Gerber, 86, formerly of Hagerstown, Md., passed away Wednesday July 25, 2007, in the loving care of her daughters, Carla Gerber Rutledge, RN and Carol Gerber Anderson, RN.

Born Friday, March 18, 1921, in Great Bend, Kan., she was the daughter of the late Frank Meitner and the late May Menzer Meitner.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Richard Gerber, who served in World War II as a 1st lieutenant with the 444th Bomb Squad. He was stationed in Great Bend, where he met and married Josephine.

She graduated from St. Elizabeth's Hospital in 1942. The accomplishment for which her children were most proud was her graduation from Mount St. Mary's College with her B.S. degree in nursing at the age of 60.

Josephine was employed by Dr. Edward Ditto for many years.

She was a member of the St. Ann Catholic Church, Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion, B.P.O. Elks Lodge 378, Leitersburg Homemakers Club, Leitersburg Senior Citizens Club and St. Ann's Golden Age.

She is survived by four daughters, Jean Gerber Witmer of Hagerstown, Carla Gerber Rutledge of Cumming, Ga., and Carol Gerber Anderson of Cumming, Mary Jo Kalbfleisch of Williamsport, Md.; two sons, Richard Carl Gerber of Union City, Okla., and Ronald Francis Gerber of Hagerstown; one sister, Fran Healey of Denver, Colo.; nine grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Gene Meitner and Carl Meitner.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday, July 28, 2007, at 12 p.m., from the St. Ann Catholic Church, 1525 Oak Hill Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Douglas Kenney as celebrant.

The family will receive friends at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 27.

Interment will be in the Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
