San Mar open house celebrates two anniversaries

July 27, 2007

BOONSBORO - San Mar Children's Home will hold a open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, to mark the anniversary of two of its programs. The open house will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Jack E. Barr Therapeutic Group Home and the first anniversary of the Dr. Henry F. and Florence Hill Graff Shelter.

The Graff Shelter welcomed its first residents in July 2006. Since that time, the 12-bed shelter has provided a safe haven for more than 100 adolescent girls. Teenage girls can stay in the shelter for up to 90 days while a more permanent living situation is found.

The Barr Home provides therapeutic foster care for up to eight girls at a time. For adolescents with serious emotional disturbances, the Barr Home provides an environment conducive to learning social and psychological skills. Specially trained staff members provide an array of therapeutic interventions. Although the types of combinations of treatment vary, individual psychotherapy, group therapy and behavior modification are included for each girl.

The anniversary celebration will include tours of the facilities, refreshments and an opportunity to meet some of the San Mar staff.
