Mail Call

July 26, 2007

"Would the Washington County Sheriff's Department please station a deputy at the intersection of Security Road and Antietam Drive? There is a four-way stop sign at this intersection but these trucks never stop, much less slow down. Get out your ticket books, boys, you could have a field day at this intersection and you just might save someone's life."

"The minimum wage increased to $5.85 an hour. Is there anyone who thinks this is a fair wage for anything? No wonder there are so many drug dealers."

"Well, we will have had 12 years of the Bushes and looks like 16 years of the Clintons is going to happen, and we all wonder why the country is headed down instead of up. I was turned off by the first Bush's continual saying that he was vetoing it because it was inflationary, I ended up despising the continual bombardment about Clinton's misconduct and now I can't stand listening to President Bush anymore. Pretty much sick of watching Clinton's campaign already. I think I will watch the 'Cartoon Channel.'"

"As a parent of a soldier stationed in Iraq, I would like to ask those of you who are against the war to please refrain from speaking for our military families. Yes, we worry our loved one won't come home alive, yes, we worry about the call we may get that he's hurt. However, you are not helping us deal with it ... on the contrary. It only makes things worse for us. You see, we know how important it is for our country to succeed there. We know that the news does not tell all the positive things happening. We also know that this is the job our son has chosen. Much like a firefighter running into a burning building, much like a police officer undercover with crack dealers, this is their job. While you have every right to speak your mind, remember that it was because someone gave of his life for you to be able to do so."

"Coming from the newspaper Sunday, July 22, American children need to take an idea from these young people over in San Pedro, where these boys are striving to be baseball players. It's not the idea that it's baseball. It's whatever you want to do, your dream. They have dreams to live up to. The American kids just want to get high on drugs, alcohol, shoot one another or whatever. If they had to grow up the hard way like some of these children, it'd be a different story."

"I am calling in reference to the person who could not believe that someone would pay between $60 and $90 to go see Taylor Hicks, that he really had no business being on the TV show that got him where he is. Thank you for your opinion. I won't criticize your opinion, although I have paid more than $400 already for me and my family to see Taylor Hicks this summer alone. We have thoroughly, completely enjoyed his performances. They're just unbelievably wonderful. I wouldn't pay $20 to go see the average country music entertainer, because I don't like country music. Thank you for your opinion, though."

"I'm hearing on TV where Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are saying it's racism and hate among us Americans that we're against the illegal immigration. It's neither of what they're saying. As far as I'm concerned, the (immigrants) are no better than the lawbreakers themselves. They're not supposed to be here. That's the part of it. They're here illegally. There's lots of people waiting to get into this country, and they can't get in from other countries, so why should they get special exemption? Those people, those politicians will do anything to get a vote, but I'll guarantee you they've lost mine."

"Let me make sure I understand this. We are supposed to conserve energy to save the environment, yet if we conserve too much, Allegheny Power doesn't make a profit. The Public Service Commission votes to allow them to bill people the difference. Isn't what the competition that our legislature promised us a few years ago was supposed to prevent?"

"I can't believe what I just read. A caller from Boonsboro said 'Bring our people back and have the fight here, so we would know who we were killing.' Just imagine 9/11 90 times over. Get the picture? Why would anyone want the fight here?"

"Dear taxpayers: Please read The Daily Mail in Monday's paper. Hagerstown police stopped 800 vehicles, and three people were charged with driving under the influence. This is from 9 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday, in the 200 block of Eastern Boulevard. This goes to show you that this is poor management, because evidently we don't have that many drunks in this city. So I think our policemen should be somewhere else instead of wasting taxpayers' money."
