Coming Sunday: Doing Time

July 25, 2007

the first of a three-part prison series

What goes on behind the razor wire and bars at the state prison complex south of Hagerstown is a mystery to most people. While the three prisons have an impact on the area, both economically and socially, few residents have ventured inside.

Life for inmates, and for the correctional officers and staff who work at the prisons, is dictated by rules, regulations, discipline and, for some, fear.

This Herald-Mail package will offer a rare look at what it's like to live or work in the prisons.

The series begins Sunday, taking readers inside the Maryland Correctional Insititution, where they will meet some of the correctional officers and the inmates.

On Sunday, Aug. 5, we will take a similar look at the Maryland Correctional Training Center, and on Sunday, Aug. 12, we'll venture inside the Roxbury Correctional Institution.
