New assistant state's attorney position OK'd

July 25, 2007|By JOSHUA BOWMAN

A new assistant state's attorney position was approved Tuesday by the Washington County Commissioners.

The new prosecutor will target the county's most violent and active criminals, Washington County State's Attorney Charles Strong said.

The position will be paid for with a $76,168 grant from the Governor's Office of Crime Control and Prevention. The grant is linked to a $50,700 grant awarded to the City of Hagerstown to employ a crime analyst.

The analyst and prosecutor would work together to "track and target the county's most violence-prone individuals before they shoot someone," Hagerstown Police Chief Arthur Smith said.

Smith said the county is under no obligation to fund the position if the grant is not renewed next year.
