Federal powers ahead

RISING SUN, Md. - Federal made the most of four home runs to advance to the losers' bracket semifinals of the Maryland 11-12 state tournament with an 11-3 win over Arbutus on Monday.

Federal plays West Salisbury tonight at 7.

Down 3-0, Aaron Showe got Federal started with a solo home run in the fourth inning and the momentum continued.

In the fifth with one runner on, Alex Courtney singled and Showe put Federal ahead with a three-run homer. Zane Schreiber singled and scored on a triple by Cole Myers for a 5-3 lead.

Federal broke the game wide open when Alijah Benson led off the sixth with a homer. After Phil Pietro singled between two walks to load the bases, Courtney brought everyone home with a grand slam. Schreiber doubled and scored on a single by Josh Barron to finish the scoring.

Schreiber started and went the first two innings before Myers went 3 1/3 relief innings for the victory, while striking out six.
