Deadline looms for FSA nominees

July 24, 2007

Farmers and other agricultural producers have until Aug. 1 to nominate eligible candidates from Local Administrative Area 3 to serve on the local FSA county committee.

Area 3 is the part of Washington County that is south of Md. 68 and south of Alt. U.S. 40 at Boonsboro.

"I encourage all producers to get involved by nominating eligible candidates to serve on the county committee," said Colleen Cashell, executive director of USDA's Farm Service Agency here.

"Individuals may nominate themselves or others as candidates. Also, organizations representing minorities and women are encouraged to nominate candidates."

FSA county committees help local farmers "by making decisions on commodity price support loans, conservation programs and disaster programs, and by working closely with county executive directors," Cashell said. There are three people on the local committee, she said.

Candidates must participate or cooperate in a program administered by FSA, be eligible to vote in a county committee election and live in the administrative area in which the person is a candidate.

For more on the requirements, go online to and click on "News & Events", then "County Committee Elections".

All nominees must sign form FSA-669A. It is at USDA Service Centers and online at the Web site listed above.

Nominations must be postmarked or received in the local USDA Service Center by close of business Aug. 1.

Voting takes place in the fall. Ballots will be mailed to eligible voters by Nov. 2. They must be returned by Dec. 3. Newly-elected members take office in January.
