WAYNESBORO, Pa. - John E. "Merf" Tosten Jr., 77, of 27 E. North St., died Saturday, July 21, 2007, at Waynesboro Hospital.

Born June 20, 1930, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late John Emanuel and Ruth Rebecca Neal Tosten.

He was a 1948 graduate of Washington Township High School.

Prior to retiring in 1992, he was a technician for United Telephone Co., "Sprint," for 27 years.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He served 27 months in Japan, Korea and Vietnam on the USS Epping Forest, LSD.

He was a member of BPO Elks Lodge 731, Eagles Club Inc. and Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15, all of Waynesboro.


He is survived by his wife of more than 55 years, Carolyn S. "KY" Smith Tosten; three children, Michael H. Tosten of Aiken, S.C., Sally T. Borzager of Selbyville, Del., and SueAnn McKendrick of Waynesboro; one brother, Barry L. Tosten of Newville, Pa.; one grandson; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one son, J. Scott Tosten, and one sister, Lavon R. Newcomer.

Services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro. Pastor Bill Schuit will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. An Elks memorial service will be at 7:30 p.m.
