Lowans is new pastor at two city United Methodist churches

The Rev. Jerry L. Lowans, the new pastor of both Washington Square and St. Matthew's United Methodist churches in Hagerstown, is a native son who graduated from South Hagerstown High School in 1969.

After earning a bachelor's degree in chemistry at Arkansas College, Lowans received a master's in business administration from Bowie State in 1983 and began employment at a research chemist at 3M in Middleway, W.Va.

He also worked as a chemist in the Washington, D.C., area and then as computer programming manager at the U.S. Coast Guard in Kearneysville, W.Va.

In 2004, Lowans earned a Master of Divinity degree from Wesley Theological Seminary. He is pursuing a doctorate online and expects to travel to and graduate at Canterbury, England, in a few years.

From 1991 to now, Lowans was pastor at Butler's Chapel and Jones Springs United Methodist charge.

Lowans has served as volunteer chaplain at Western Maryland Hospital Center, Washington County Hospital and City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va.

A widower for three years after 28 years of marriage to his wife, Glenda, Lowans has two sons, Gabriel and Justin, and a daughter, Janessa. He also has one grandchild, Israel Lowans, 5.
