Pride Days celebrates new library's first year

SMITHSBURG - A bigger Smithsburg Pride Days kicks off Saturday and will celebrate the one-year anniversary of the Smithsburg Public Library - a building that used to be the size of a two-bedroom apartment with a bathroom the size of a utility closet.

The free, two-day event is coordinated yearly by Smithsburg residents and community volunteers.

Along with more food vendors, 28 craft vendors are expected, up from the 15 there last year, said organizer Joann Celestial.

Smithsburg Public Library will host several Pride Days activities. Harpist Sally Lay performs Saturday; magician Dean Burkett performs Sunday.

Other events are scheduled throughout the town and are as follows:

There will be Civil War re-enactors all day Saturday and Sunday at Smithsburg Veterans Park.

Saturday, July 21

7 to 10 a.m. - All-you-can-eat breakfast. Smithsburg Fire Hall.

8 a.m. - 5K and fun run at the carnival grounds behind the Smithsburg Fire Hall. Registration begins at 7 a.m.

9 a.m. - Cal Ripken league baseball, off Bradbury Avenue. Continues all day.

9 a.m. to 5 p.m. - Tennis tournaments will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

10 a.m. to 4 p.m. - Moonbounce. Smithsburg Public Library, 20 E. Water St.

10 a.m. to 5 p.m. - Craft and food vendors on hand. Smithsburg Veterans Park.

11 a.m. - Parade will form at the tennis court on Bradbury Avenue at 9 a.m. The parade ends at Fil Tec.

Noon to 4 p.m. - Games, a slip-and-slide, water balloon fight and inflatable slide. Smithsburg Veterans Park.

Noon to 4 p.m. - Open houses at Trinity Lutheran Church, 15 N. Main St., St. Anne's Episcopal Church, 9 N. Maple Ave., and Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services, also on Maple Avenue. Continues 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 22.

12:30 to 4:30 p.m. - The Smithsburg Historical Society Museum, off East Water Street, will be open. The museum also will be open 1:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 22.

12:30 p.m. - Terry Hayes' puppet show. Smithsburg Public Library.

1:30 to 2:30 p.m. - Sally Lay, local harpist, will perform. Smithsburg Public Library.

2:30 p.m. - Story time. Smithsburg Public Library. Story time continues Sunday at 2 and 3 p.m.

7 p.m. - Dance at the park, with fireworks at dusk. Smithsburg Veterans Park.

Sunday, July 22

8 a.m. - Community worship service, sponsored by the Smithsburg Area Church Association at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, 9 N. Maple Ave.

9 a.m. - Cal Ripken League baseball, off Bradbury Avenue. Continues throughout the day.

Noon to 4 p.m. - Children's activities. Smithsburg Veterans Park.

Noon to 4 p.m. - Moonbounce. Smithsburg Public Library.
