Three people were charged with drug crimes Tuesday after police responded to a call for a chemical odor in a room at the Quality Inn on Dual Highway, said Lt. Mike King of the Hagerstown Police Department.

A desk clerk called police after she smelled a chemical odor coming from a room, and noticed a high volume of foot traffic in and out of the room, King said.

A man who answered the door when police arrived had suspected heroin in his hands, and he swallowed it when he saw police, King said.

Drugs were in plain view inside the room and officers obtained a search warrant, King said.

Officers found about $18,000 worth of powdered cocaine, crack cocaine, heroin, Ecstasy pills and marijuana, and several thousand dollars in cash, King said.
