This fall, Frostburg State University will welcome Hagerstown area students who have received academic awards for study at the university.

Virginia Ankeney of Big Pool received an Academic Excellence Award. She is a junior at FSU majoring in liberal studies. Ankeney is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and plans to become a teacher.

Jonathan Beattie of Hagerstown was awarded the Annual Fund Alumni and Friends Marching Band Assistant Scholarship. A 2004 graduate of South Hagerstown high School, he is majoring in music education at FSU. Beattie participates in jazz, Latin and marching/concert bands, and wind, low brass and brass ensembles. He is a member of Friends of Music, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity and the Low Brass Society. Beattie is the son of Patrice Davis, George Davis and Martin Beattie.

Sara Buzard of Middletown, Md., is the recipient of a Loats Scholarship. She graduated from Middletown High School, where she participated in indoor/outdoor track and the tech crew. Buzard was a member of the National Honor Society, an AP Scholar, and Maryland National Scholar. She is the daughter of Gregory and Michele Buzard.

Ashley Daniels of Hagerstown received an Academic Honor Scholarship. She played softball at North Hagerstown High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and Honor Club. Daniels plans to major in social studies/secondary education. She is the daughter of Felix and Anna Daniels.

Chelsea Hammond of Hagerstown was awarded an Academic Distinction Scholarship. She is a graduate of North Hagerstown High School. Her parents are Walter and Gerrianne Hammond.

Courtney Long of Boonsboro is the recipient of an Academic Excellence Scholarship. She participated in varsity softball and volleyball at Boonsboro High School. Long was a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society and named to Who's Who. She is the daughter of Thomas and Deena Long.

Michelle Mummert of Williamsport received the First United Bank College of Business, Frostburg Lions Marketing, Nelson Guild Senior Honors and Trident Health Resources scholarships. Presently a senior at FSU, she is a member of Delta Zeta National Sorority (president), Greek Council Representative and Order of Omega and Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Societies. Mummert is majoring in business administration with a minor in marketing. She is the daughter of Jeff and Sally Mummert.

Michael Rinebolt of Smithsburg was awarded the Hedrick Business Scholarship. He is a 2005 graduate of Smithsburg High School, and attended Hagerstown Community College. Rinebolt is a sophomore at FSU majoring in accounting with a minor in economics. He is the son of Brian and Mary Rinebolt.

Stephanie Rulle of Hagerstown is the recipient of an Academic Honor Scholarship. A graduate of North Hagerstown High School, she was a member of the girls varsity soccer team, the National Honor Society and the chorus. She also does volunteer work at her local hospital. Rulle plans to study graphic design at FSU. She is the daughter of Mark and Kelly Rulle.

Danielle Shives of Big Pool is the recipient of an Academic Excellence Award and Academic Honor Scholarship. She graduated from Clear Spring High School and Hagerstown Community College. Shives is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and intends to major in elementary education. She is the daughter of Bruce and Sherry Shives.

Rebecca Slate of Hagerstown received an Academic Excellence Award/Leadership Scholarship and Academic Honor Scholarship. At Clear Spring High School, she was a member of the National Honor Society, president of FBLA, editor of the yearbook and an officer in the History Club. Slate plans to major in sociology and minor in women's studies. She is the daughter of Rebecca Grove.

Samantha Spencer will receive an Academic Honor Scholarship. A graduate of Boonsboro High School, she was a member of the National Honor Society, and participated in the Envirothon. Spencer plans to study urban and regional planning and journalism at FSU. She is the daughter of Bill and Sandy Spencer.

Carl Spessard IV of Hagerstown was awarded an Annual Fund Alumni Award. He participated in baseball and golf at North Hagerstown High School, where he was a member of the Honor Club. Spessard achieved the Boys Scouts of America Eagle rank. He is the son of Carl and Dawn Spessard.

Adrienne Tracey of Smithsburg is the recipient of a University Scholarship. She graduated from Smithsburg High School, where she was active in band. Tracey received the Faculty Honor Award and participated in FBLA, SGA and Latin Club. She plans to major in elementary education. Her parents are Rick and Kathy Tracey.

Dustin Vogel of Hagerstown received an Academic Distinction Scholarship. He participated in soccer and lacrosse at North Hagerstown High School. Vogel plans to major in criminal justice. He is the son of Carol and Robin Vogel.
