Stump the Ump

July 14, 2007

The following situations, submitted by local umpire Denny Hockensmith, apply to all levels of Little League Baseball.

1. With a runner on first base and one out, a batter swings and misses a third strike as the ball hits his knuckles. The catcher throws out the runner, who is trying to steal second. What is the correct call: batter out, foul ball or hit batter, and where should the umpire place the runner or is he/she out?

2. The defensive players are talking on the field, saying "Hey batter, batter." Should the umpire allow this?

3. When should an umpire confront spectators about their objectionable behavior?
