Fire causes heavy damage to Berkeley Co. home

July 12, 2007

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Fire caused heavy damage to a single-story house at 86 Fletcher Court in Berkeley County on Wednesday afternoon, a fire official said.

A neighbor noticed that the rear of the house off Moler Avenue was on fire about 5:15 p.m. and alerted a person inside, said Tommy Newcomb, deputy chief of the Bedington Volunteer Fire Department.

Firefighters were able to knock down the fire within 15 minutes after arriving but about three-quarters of the house was destroyed, Newcomb said.

It is not clear what started the fire, Newcomb said.

Newcomb declined to say who owned the house.

People who lived in the house were being assisted by the American Red Cross with emergency housing, officials said.
