Pa. man charged in hit-and-run

A Hazleton, Pa., man faces several charges after an accident Sunday on U.S. 11 in Washington County.

Thomas William Eichelberger, 48, is charged with driving while under the influence, concealing a dangerous weapon, failing to stop after an accident and other crimes, according to Washington County District Court documents.

Maryland State Police were dispatched to U.S. 11 north of Maugans Avenue for a hit-and-run accident at about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, court documents show.

A Ford van had extensive damage to its bumper, and a Chevrolet Malibu had front-end damage. The driver of the Ford said that the driver of the Malibu fled the scene on foot before troopers arrived, according to court documents. The man fled across U.S. 11 and into a wooded area, court documents show.

The damaged Malibu was stolen, according to documents.

The Hagerstown Police Department and Washington County Sheriff's Department responded to help troopers search the area. At about 8 p.m., a man matching the description of the driver of the Malibu came out of the wooded area and was walking on U.S. 11 in the area of Maugans Avenue, court documents show. The man was taken to Washington County Hospital to be treated for a twisted ankle.

Eichelberger was wanted through the Winchester, Va., police department for motor vehicle theft in a separate incident.
