WAYNESBORO, Pa. - A Waynesboro man died Wednesday night after falling from the roof of his two-story apartment building at 121 Walnut St., according to Ray Shultz, chief of the Waynesboro Police Department.

James F. Smith III, 35, was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:12 p.m., Franklin County Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner said. The cause of death was blunt force head trauma, he said.

The Waynesboro Police Department received a call Wednesday at 9:25 p.m. reporting the incident and responded at 9:28 p.m., Shultz said.

Two people were walking in the alley to the rear of 121 Walnut St. and found Smith on the ground, Shultz said.

"It appears he had accidentally fallen from the roof area," Shultz said.

There has been no autopsy, but toxicology tests are being completed, with results expected in four to six weeks, Conner said.

Smith was alone when the incident occurred and there were no witnesses, Conner said.

Funeral services for Smith will be at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel in Hagerstown, but no date had been set, according to the funeral home.

The Waynesboro Police Department and Franklin County Coroner's Officer are investigating the incident.
