Pride Days festival will include fireworks

The Smithsburg Pride Days festival will include fireworks this year.

The Smithsburg Town Council on Tuesday approved a request by Lt. Patrick Baker of the Smithsburg Community Volunteer Fire Co. to allow fireworks at the event, which will be July 21 and 22 at Smithsburg Veterans Park.

"The goal was to build Pride Days this year, and fireworks will be a big draw," Baker said.

The event will include a 5k race, all-you-can-eat breakfast, parade, tennis tournaments, a street dance and various crafts and other activities.

New officer joins police department

A new officer was added to the Smithsburg Police Department on Tuesday.

Charles "Chucky" Johnson, a lifetime Smithsburg resident, was sworn in by Mayor Mildred "Mickey" Myers.

Johnson, who is the department's fourth officer, said he hopes "to serve the town as well as I can."

Souder resigns from park commission

Donald Souder has submitted his resignation to the Smithsburg Park Commission, Mayor Mildred "Mickey" Myers said Tuesday.

Souder, who was appointed a year ago, has resigned for family reasons, Myers said.

The town council also announced Tuesday that Jeff Davis, whose term on the park commission had expired, has agreed to serve again. He was reappointed Tuesday by the council for another four-year term.
