Girl gets surgery after dog attack
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A 6-year-old girl who was attacked by a dog Saturday north of Martinsburg underwent surgery that night and has received more than 100 stitches, according to a Berkeley County (W.Va.) Sheriff's Department press release.
Police said the girl was attacked by a Rottweiler on Rudolph Court off of Williamsport Pike. Her injuries extended along her upper legs and hips.
Berkeley County Animal Control and Sheriffs Department officers responded to the scene, and officials have said the dog owner relinquished the Rottweiler to animal control authorities.
Officials said the dog will be euthanized by a veterinarian.
The girl was flown to Washington (D.C.) Children's Hospital for her treatment of her injuries.
Officials said in a press release Sunday that the girl and her mother were returning home when the dog attacked the girl. The mother and several neighbors tried to get the dog to release the child, but they were unsuccessful, police said.
