College Park girl is named Miss Md. Outstanding Teen

Miss College Park Outstanding Teen Kasey Staniszewski of Swan Point, Md., was crowned Miss Maryland Outstanding Teen Friday as a series of pageants continues at The Maryland Theatre.

As the new Miss Maryland Outstanding Teen, Staniszewski will receive a $500 scholarship, among other gifts. She will compete at the Miss America Outstanding Teen competition in Orlando, Fla., where a $30,000 scholarship is at stake.

Staniszewski, soon to be a junior at La Plata (Md.) High School, performed "Good Morning Baltimore" from the Broadway play "Hairspray" for the talent competition. Her platform was breast cancer awareness and prevention.

The 13 teen contestants were judged in six categories - private interview, talent, evening wear, lifestyle and fitness in sportswear, on-stage question and scholastic achievement.


Other winners Friday were:

· First runner-up - Miss Allegany County Outstanding Teen Joanna Guy of Swanton, Md., who received a $225 scholarship.

· Second runner-up - Miss Burtonsville Outstanding Teen Velia Biagianti of Charlestown, Md., who received a $120 scholarship.

· Third runner-up - Miss Cumberland Outstanding Teen Johanna Greber of Cumberland, Md., who received a $150 scholarship.

· Fourth runner-up - Miss Annapolis Outstanding Teen Caroline Pledger of Burtonsville, Md., who received a $100 scholarship.

Friday's pageant was organized by the Miss Maryland Organization, part of the Miss America Organization.

The final pageant in the Miss Maryland series takes place tonight when the new Miss Maryland will be named.
