Local couple visits Japan

June 27, 2007

During a trip to Japan in late May, Lena May and Ed Itnyre of Rohrersville had an opportunity to visit a number of fine museums, including those at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They also visited some of the most well-known landscape gardens of Japan, as well as numerous ancient and picturesque shrines and castles.

Of considerable interest were the small rice paddies, which seemed to appear wherever land and water were available. One rice paddy was in a vacant lot in the business district of a highly populated area.

The Itnyres traveled on a small ship, the Clipper Odyssey, which stopped at ports along the coasts of Japan. The Itnyres found the Japanese people to be very friendly. The mayor of Hiroshima came on board to welcome the tour group to his city. A number of talented community and school groups entertained at various ports with music and traditional Japanese dance.
