You Said It

June 25, 2007

"This is in response to the Hagerstown caller who said that Grady Little took the Red Sox to the World Series. This is not true, because Terry Francona did this, not Grady Little."

"As a retired Verizon Yellow Pages employee, I'm responding to the caller upset over the multiple phone books they receive. They seem to think that they are paying for these books through their phone bill. The FCC requires that all land-line numbers be listed in all phone directories. The Big Book, Yellow Book and the old Verizon Yellow Pages are privately owned companies intent on making a profit through the sale of advertising in the business section of these directories. There is no charge to a residential customer unless they request not to have their number listed, or request more than one copy of the directory. It's called free enterprise. If you don't want or need all these books, drop them into the recycle bin."

"Parents, be careful when you buy your children a cell phone. Some cell phone carriers tell you you get free Internet service for a month when you buy your phone. That might be true, but I found out the hard way. The Internet service might be free, but the games and ringers your child can download to their phone are not free. If they go on the Web and click 'OK' for these ringers and games, you will see those extra charges on your phone bill and there's not much you can do about it. I had to pay hundreds of dollars one month because my child downloaded these items."

"Other countries don't approve of Americans for more reasons than their politics. They have always called us lazy, due to the number of people living on welfare. Mid-Eastern, near-Eastern, countries don't approve of our morals, high divorce rate, teen pregnancies, children showing disrespect to elders. I lived overseas, so I heard it all. Vietnam era made us very unpopular. No one would help us (like now) in the war effort, except South Korea and Australia. Foreigners like what they can get from us. Many have told me they don't like it here, just the freedom and chance to make money and/or education. Sad, but true."

"There's no need to read the comics page anymore. There are far more laughs in this column. The latest: In agreement with an editorial opinion, a Leitersburg caller comments, 'You really hit the ball on the head. I hope people read this column.' I know that I certainly will, if only to find out the latest caller's corruption of colloquialisms such as 'hit the nail on the head.' I've seen thousands of balls in my lifetime, but never a ball with a head."

"Instead of continuing the blame game on the new hospital delays, why not lay the blame where it belongs? It's the hospital officials who are to blame for trying to place it on a site where they said they would not build a new hospital and which was not zoned for a hospital. If they had chosen a site with proper zoning, it would be built by now, and at far less cost."

"The Commission on Aging wants the county to pay for locating a seniors center in an old building on Antietam Street that they want the county to pay for and renovate. A year or two ago, they closed their seniors center on Public Square that was in a seniors building and close to others, so they could move to new offices, which the county had to pay for. Senior activities and meals were discontinued. Now, they say there's a need for the same services they chose to abandon. Looks like they made a mistake and should have kept the seniors center operating that they already had and saved the taxpayers a lot of money. Why don't they just reopen the center they had?"

"Saddam Hussein was never a threat to the U.S. This man was not stupid, and knew if he attacked us or an ally, he would be destroyed. The idea that one country can invade another because they pose a threat has set a dangerous precedent. Just think how many countries we are a threat to, due to the policies of the Bush administration. Get ready to be invaded."

"I certainly hope that CBS does not hire Rosie to take Bob Barker's job. She is not even in his class. The only thing she could do would be a talk show like the Springer fellow does. That's about what she should be doing - certainly not on a nice 'Price is Right' show like Bob Barker has hosted for years."

"We will never stop illegal immigration, because if we do, the hotel, motel, as well as restaurant businesses, will go out of businesses. That is where we get all the labor for the hotel/motel industry, as well as the service industry in general. So therefore, illegal immigration will never ever be stopped."
