Williamsport Rotary sends juniors to leadership event

Nine Williamsport High School juniors recently attended a Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (RYLA) at Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pa., according to a Williamsport Rotary press release.

Juniors attending the event were Christi Gagnon, Hailee Growden, Eddie Schubel, Samantha Sines, Patrick Hammond, Julie Cook, Tonya Campbell, Zac Burger and Alicia Domsky. The students received scholarships from the Rotary Club of Williamsport to attend the event, according to the release.

The academy is an intensive training program for community youth leaders, according to the release.

RYLA's core curriculum includes fundamentals of leadership, ethics of positive leadership, problem solving and conflict management, Rotary's purpose and service to the community, and building self-confidence and self-esteem.

Areas of emphasis included global positioning exercises at Juniata College, team building events at Shaver's Creek and leadership training provided by Rotarian Bruce Harlan. In addition, the participants completed several community service projects in accord with the Rotary motto of "Service Above Self."
