County teens ready for Miss Maryland competition

County teens ready for Miss Maryland competition

June 24, 2007|by TIFFANY ARNOLD

Pageant week has begun for two Washington County women who are counting down to the big day: the opening day of the Miss Maryland Scholarship Pageant in Hagerstown.

Miss Western Maryland, Sara Duncan, and Miss Washington County, Whitney Colombo, will represent the county and surrounding area in the upcoming Miss Maryland competition at The Maryland Theatre.

Though the two-day preliminary competition is Wednesday and Thursday, and the new Miss Maryland won't be crowned until Saturday, Whitney and Duncan, as with the other 18 contestants entered in this year's pageant are kicking off pageant festivities today.

The weeklong stream of rehearsals, public appearances and photo opportunities begin today with an 11 a.m. luncheon at Ryan's steakhouse, off Garland Groh Boulevard in Hagerstown. The contestants will arrive for a sign-in ceremony at Valley Mall at 1 p.m.; there's a welcome party at 6 p.m. at the Four Points Sheraton on Dual Highway.

For Duncan, 19, of Keedysville, and Whitney, 17, of Hagerstown, this is the week they've been preparing for since they were crowned in February.

"I didn't think it would be as involved as it was," Duncan said.

For Duncan, winning Miss Western Maryland meant having to get new dresses, tweaking her dance for the talent competition and staying abreast of current events, particularly as they relate to her platform, autism awareness.

That's on top of the several public appearances she and Colombo have made since they received their titles.

Duncan also is preparing to go to Towson University in Towson, Md., in the fall. When she gets there, she'll be rooming with one of her competitors, Jeanna Riscigno, this year's Miss Frederick.

It's also been a busy four months for Columbo, who had to juggle her graduation from North Hagerstown High School, college visits to Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va. - where she plans to attend in the fall - and dance rehearsals.

Whitney's sister, Audreanna Colombo, 13, also is preparing to compete this weekend. Audreanna won the title of Miss Washington County Outstanding Teen and on Friday will represent the county in the Miss Maryland Outstanding Teen competition (also apart of the Miss America Organization).

The Colombos have had to dedicate an entire room in their house for just the girls' wardrobe.

Whitney said the thought of winning is what keeps her going.

"I think I'm ready to represent the state of Maryland," she said, while thumbing through one of her many pageant outfits.
