St. Lawrence Cement reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by more than 16 percent from 2000 to 2006, according to a prepared release. In doing so, the company surpassed its original target of 15 percent four years ahead of its target date of 2010.

The company met its reduction requirement through energy-efficiency projects and through the growing use of supplementary cementitious products and alternative fuels, the release says.

The company also invested tens of millions of dollars in new infrastructures to convert byproducts from the steel and other industries into valuable cement substitutes or replacement for nonrenewable fossil fuels, according to the release.

St. Lawrence is one of eight companies to reach their reduction commitments under the EPA program.
