Mail Call

June 21, 2007

"In answer to the letter to the editor in last Saturday's edition, parents should be teaching sex education, morals, contraception if the parents allow the child to have sex. Parents are responsible for their children until they are of age. As well as buying their expensive tennis shoes, they should be buying their birth control, paying for the baby if there is one. Not the government, church, teachers, you, parents are responsible for your child. Just another case of the government funding the raising of children more and more. Taxpayers are burdened enough."

- Hagerstown

"I just heard that the Orioles' manager got fired, which doesn't surprise me, but what gets me is the Orioles had a chance to hire Grady Little, the manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers. He took the Red Sox to the World Series. He was the manager here in Hagerstown for the first year or two, and an awful nice manager, awful nice man. So it just goes to show you Baltimore never has anything, because they don't use their wits."

"I'm calling about the immigrants that are coming in to Washington County. I think we should take care of people that live at Holly Place before the new immigrants. At least they are citizens of the U.S. Let's take care of the poor in Washington County first, and then the other immigrants."

"Why would the BOE want to buy the Allegheny Power building? The money is needed at other places in the school system. The county will lose taxes, and there will be no chance of future development. The taxpayers will pay two ways."

- Funkstown

"I had the same problem as one caller trying to get information. The man could not understand me, and we each had to ask four times and spell words. Banks and other companies should not put people in the customer service area. We could get the records wrong. Put English-speaking people on phones. "

- Williamsport

"I am appalled by the number of private handicapped parking spaces on any given street you travel. It seems everyone is getting on the bandwagon, with the help of their favorite physician. Our streets are deplorable to travel on, and now there is no place to park. So much for the high taxes we pay."

- Hagerstown

"I see where the Orioles are really having a tough time. I think if they would check around some of these high schools and some colleges, they would find some players that could really help them out. These guys getting all this money and not able to hit and play ball the way they should ... I believe there are high schoolers and college students that are out there who could do just as good a job. So Orioles, go check the local schools and some of the colleges, and I think you're gonna be better off."

- Hagerstown

"There is no such thing as reality TV."

- Waynesboro, Pa.

"As far as Mr. Clinton is concerned, for those who think he wasn't a good president, maybe his problem was personal, but he was not sending our boys and girls off to be killed, and he had the Palestinians and the Israelis shaking hands with each other. That came over the news today. It was in '93."

- Halfway

"I wish I were a teacher in Washington County, but I wouldn't want to live there and pay taxes. I worked 39 years and don't think I ever got a 7 percent raise, but then I didn't get paid with tax money. Time to stop the giveaway."

"To the Washington County caller who thinks that the Baltimore Orioles are a disgrace to the state of Maryland: I'm 46 years old, I've been an Orioles fan for 40 years. If you're a true fan, you stick with them through the ups and the downs. If you're a fan at all, you were probably hooting and hollering in the times when they did win the World Series, I'm sure, and you had all your Orioles clothes on, and now you say they're a disgrace. If you're a real fan, stick by them."

"Someone wrote in about every entrance was loaded with people smoking cigarettes. It's not just the hospital. The largest companies in the county have it to where you cannot walk in the doors without going through smoke. All of us are dying because of a few people who want to kill themselves."

- Hagerstown

"Hagerstown caller, I think you're completely wrong. The other countries have not liked us for a long, long time. When the World Trade Center was bombed, that was only nine months into Bush's administration, so are you telling me they bombed it, they went through it with an airplane, because they didn't like George Bush? What happened the first time, they did it under Clinton. The USS Cole was bombed under Clinton, and did they not like us when they went over to London and bombed there, and then Spain?"

- Waynesboro, Pa.

"We attended a Suns game Saturday night when they invited the Sharpsburg Little League there, and I just wanted to say thank you. We had a very enjoyable time, and the fireworks were wonderful. Thanks again to the Hagerstown Suns."

- Sharpsburg
