It's time to nominate Area 3 FSA candidates

June 19, 2007

Farmers can nominate candidates to serve on local Farm Service Agency county committees from now through Aug. 1, according to an FSA official in Washington County.

The election for Local Administrative Area 3 is this fall, said Colleen Cashell, county FSA executive director. Area 3 is the part of the county south of Md. 68 and south of U.S. Alt. 40 at Boonsboro.

"We have seen the number of minority and women producers being nominated increase significantly in recent years, and FSA would like to see that trend continue," Cashell said.

To be eligible to serve, nominees must participate or cooperate in a program administered by FSA, be eligible to vote in a county committee election, and live in Area 3.

Additionally, a person must not have been removed or disqualified from the office of county committee member, alternate or employee; removed from any public office or have been convicted of any felony; or dishonorably discharged from the armed services.

Producers may nominate themselves or others. Groups representing minorities and women may nominate candidates.

To become a nominee, eligible individuals must sign a form. It is available at the local office or online at:; click on News & Events, then County Committee Elections.

Nomination forms must be postmarked or received at Washington County USDA Service Center at 1260 Maryland Ave, Suite 107, Hagerstown, MD 21740 by close of business Aug. 1.

Committee members make decisions on disaster and conservation payments, emergency programs, commodity price support loans and payments, and other such agricultural issues. Members serve three-year terms.
