Nichols powers Suns

June 18, 2007

Patrick Nichols took advantage of his limited opportunities by stroking a grand slam Saturday to pace the Hagerstown Suns to a 5-0 victory over Lexington.

Nichols, who is the third catcher behind Erick San Pedro and Jhonatan Solano, capped the five-run second inning, which was all the scoring the Suns needed for a second straight victory.

Yader Peralta and Zach Baldwin combined on a two-hit shutout. Peralta (1-0) went 5 2/3 innings in his debut for the Suns. He was called up from extended spring training to replace Cory VanAllen, who was promoted to Single-A Potomac.

Marvin Lowrance led off the bottom of the second with a single off Lexington starter Doug Arguello, and Francisco Guzman and Sheldon Fulse followed by reaching on errors to load the bases.

After Leonard Davis hit an RBI single to right to give the Suns a 1-0 lead, Nichols blasted his home run to right-center field.
