Heartbreakers win state tourney

LAUREL, Md. - The Heartbreakers 16U fast-pitch softball team, mostly comprised of players from Washington and Frederick counties, recently won the Maryland ASA State Tournament to qualify for the Class A National Championship in Sioux Falls, S.D.

The team went 5-0, beating the MD Magic Orange 4-3 in the semifinals and Churchville Lightning 5-3 for the championship.

In the semis, Jade Bowins stole home for the winning run and Elly McCarthy had two hits and two RBI.

In the championship game, Victoria Linton had two hits, Katy Bobbitt had two RBI and Damara McDonough hit the game-winning double, knocking in two runs.

For the tournament, McCarthy hit .615, Kelly Beard hit .533 and was 2-0 pitching and Linton was 3-0.

Grier tied for 85th

DECATUR, Ill. - Hagerstown's Ashley Grier was in a tie for 85th place after a second straight 2-over-par 74 in the Michelob ULTRA Duramed FUTURES Players Championship on Friday at the Hickory Point Golf Club.

With her 148 total after two rounds, Grier was 11 strokes behind co-leaders Jeanne Cho-Hurick and Emily Bastel.
