Art classes for people with mental and physical disabilities

Three sessions of three weeks each will be held for individuals with mental and physical disabilities. Heidi Coble, a veteran special education instructor, will guide students through experiences in painting, collage and clay. All materials will be provided. Ages 5 through 12, 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays, June 16 through June 30; ages 13 through 21, 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays, July 14 through July 28; for ages 22 and older, classes will be Saturdays, Aug. 18 through Sept. 1. Plein air painting workshop

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Paint outdoors with local artist Ralph Basford. Explore the possibilities and unique characteristics of "plein air" painting. Scouting a location, setting up and executing a decisive study is the objective. Emphasis will be on composition and color management. Basford will guide the participants through the process bearing in mind that each painting has its own unique set of problems. Painters should have own materials, easel, lunch, etc. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. third Saturday of the month, June 16, July 21 and Aug. 18. $35 per student. A Year of Herbs

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A class for the herb lover or anyone who wants to learn about the many ways herbs can be used throughout the year, from cooking to decorating to medicinal uses and more. Classes meet from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturdays. Wilson College, Lortz Hall, Room 110, 1015 Philadelphia Ave. $25 per class. Limited to 18 people per class. Instructor is Chris Mayer, a Pennsylvania certified horticulturist, master gardener and home horticulture educator. Classes include:

· June 16 - Thyme will be the focus of this class. Students will explore thyme's history, cultivation and many uses in the kitchen. They also will try their hands at creating their own bouquet garni - herb bundles typically used to flavor soups and stews.

· July 21 - Scented geraniums, a favorite of Victorian gardeners and named 2006 Herb of the Year, will be the topic.

· Aug. 25 For pesto lovers: Basil, the topic of this class, is a key ingredient in the healthy pasta sauce, as well as a number of other Italian dishes. Easy to grow indoors and out, the tropical herb has been grown for more than 5,000 years and is a perfect complement to tomatoes.

French language

Washington County Free Library's Friends of the Library will offer French classes for children entering grades three and four and five and six. Grades three and four, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.; grades five and six, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Washington County Free Library, 100 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown. Free. Maximum two classes per child. Civil War seminar

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War will present "Mystic Chords of Memory: How Americans have remembered and commemorated the Civil War." Tours will include Civil War commemoration on Antietam National Battlefield and in Washington, D.C. Continues through Sunday, June 24. Learn a Dance in a Day

All About Animals

Children in first, second and third grades will learn about different kinds of pets, how to take care of pets, and the responsibilities that go along with owning a pet. 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, June 25, through Friday, June 29, and again Monday, July 30, through Friday, Aug. 3.
