A wry look at the 'best' of Mail Call/You Said It

A wry look at the 'best' of Mail Call/You Said It

June 14, 2007

"Some inconsiderate idiot . . .".

As opposed to some considerate idiot.

"Why not set up an extra table with leftover pictures from parents, grandparents and other relatives that you no longer need, and put them on a table for people to take as a gift?"

Finally, a nice way to get rid of family members you no longer have a use for.

"Spelling is about as much a sport as soccer is. It's a recreational activity for girls, just like spelling."

Tell that to David Beckham, Pele, Ronaldo, and all the other famous male soccer players.

"We are judged by the people that we keep."

And we should be judged harshly if we are keeping people.

"Just when you think you've read it all in this column, another fascinating inquiry surfaces. Now, someone wants to know how to get rid of a mouse in their house without killing it, and they have a cat. One wonders if Tim Rowland is writing this column. "

No, if Tim Rowland were writing this, the cat would have a funny name and maybe be a vegetarian, chewing nervously on a carrot stick while the mouse taunts it. Or maybe the cat would be afraid of the mouse, like the way some big strong guys are afraid of tiny little house spiders. And it would be funny and you could read it and chuckle and go to work knowing that no matter what bad things happened, at least your day started with a laugh.

High five to these callers:

"When we really think it through, we should all be very thankful that most of us have it so good, compared to folks in other Third World countries. Most of us don't even know real hardships like so many around the world have to face daily. My wife and I are continually thankful to God that we live in America. Sure, we have problems that need fixing, but we still live in the best country in the world. Smile, America."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"This is in reference to the character who badly hurt the Chihuahua dog by breaking its leg. I commend the judge who imposed the maximum sentence. However, those laws need to be changed and strengthened. This raises several questions for me, such as: How many dogs can a person have on a property in this city? For six dogs, doesn't he require a kennel license?

"The PCP didn't just force itself into his system, did it? Neither he nor his wife or anyone else in that household should have any animals. All of those animals should have been taken away from them and placed in loving adoptive homes."

- Hagerstown

Frequently asked questions:

"I think the City and the County Commissioners should get on CSX. Check the railroad tracks at Oak Hill Avenue, there by the printer's. Also Itnyre Road and Md. 62. If that were a county or city property, they'd be all over them to fix that. It's time for CSX to fix its railroad tracks for drivers."

- Leitersburg

I called CSX at 800-232-0144, option 3, to report rough crossings. A representative is to call me back.

"Somebody from the City Light Department ought to go over to the intersection of U.S. 40 at Dual Highway and Eastern Boulevard. The northbound lane of Eastern Boulevard, at 4:30 in the morning, stays red when no one is there for about at least 90 seconds, while traffic is waiting to move, especially on southbound Eastern Boulevard.

Please look into it. It's difficult, sitting there waiting to go to work while you're wasting time."

- North End

I spoke with Randy Plunkert of the Department of Public Works and he is checking into this.

"I was recently looking at our local TV Guide and noticed that Antietam Cable is the only cable provider that does not offer the Disney Channel. What is the problem? Enough with the excuses that it would cost the cable consumer more per month. They certainly did not survey me when they added the sports channels and my bill went up. In every other area, the Disney Channel is part of the regular cable lineup. Please, Antietam Cable, just suck it up and get the Disney Channel."

- Hagerstown

I spoke with Mindy in customer service at Antietam Cable (301-797-5000). She referred me to Cindy, director of marketing. I left a message for Cindy to call me.
