School redistricting meeting is tonight

HAGERSTOWN - A committee drafting a redistricting plan for some schools in Washington County is expected to reach consensus on proposed changes tonight.

The facilities and enrollment advisory committee will meet at 6 p.m. at the school system's central office.

A redistricting effort has been ongoing since March. Redistricting is necessary to relieve overcrowding in some schools and to fill a new Rockland Woods Elementary School opening in 2008, officials have said. Replacement schools for Maugansville and Pangborn elementary schools also will open that year.

Schools affected by possible attendance zone changes include Funkstown, Emma K. Doub, Lincolnshire, Bester, Eastern, Fountain Rock, Boonsboro, Paramount, Greenbrier and Conococheague elementary schools.

Robert Spong, facilities planner, said the committee is expected to have its recommendations to the Board of Education by July 16. The board will make the final decision on any boundary changes.

At tonight's meeting, the committee will receive some requested boundary information, Spong said. He said staff will review a section of the Lincolnshire attendance zone proposal with the committee, as well as some Old Forge and Greenbrier elementary schools boundary information.

The committee also has requested to review the proposal to move residents of Pleasant View Estates into the Rockland Woods Elementary attendance zone. Children in that neighborhood were slated to attend Fountain Rock.

Pleasant View Estates was added to the Rockland Woods attendance zone during a committee meeting in May. Officials at that meeting said the changes were a direct result of public feedback.

The committee also is scheduled to hear race/ethnicity data for the new proposed attendance zones.

The committee is slated to reach consensus about the boundaries after hearing these detailed reports.

The next facilities and enrollment advisory committee meeting is set for June 28.
