This year's Relay for Life, an international fundraiser for cancer research, raised about $90,000 here this weekend - so far.

Cathy Beckley-Thomas, community manager for the Washington County chapter of the American Cancer Society, said the event, held Friday and early Saturday at Hagerstown's Fairgrounds Park, drew about 350 people on 31 teams.

Though the number of participants was about the same as last year, "we had a lot of new people - a lot of young people with a lot of enthusiasm," she said.

This year's goal for Washington County is $100,000. Beckley-Thomas said she hopes more money will be coming in. "I hope some more businesses will kick in," she added.

Organizers plan to announce a final total at a wrap-up event scheduled for July 12. They also will recognize the top fundraisers and give out awards, she said.

One award was given already.

"We gave an award to the city parks and recreation department for all their help," she said.

They will start talking in July about next year's event, she said.

And she already has a couple of targets in mind.

One is more business participation.

"Very few businesses really support us," she said.

And generally, she's hoping for more participants.

"We need more teams and more young people," she said.
