Hyatt's success is a product of passion

June 09, 2007|By DAN KAUFFMAN

If South Hagerstown softball coach Angela McQuillen had a cloning device, she'd make as many duplicates of junior shortstop Brittany Hyatt as possible.

"She works hard all the time, and she'll do anything you ask her to do," McQuillen said. "You'd love to have five or six of them just like her. She loves the game. It's her passion, and it shows on the field."

Hyatt is a force with a bat in her hands, and smooth as silk in the field - which explains why Washington County coaches voted her the 2007 All-Washington County Softball Player of the Year.

Hyatt hit .540 with nine doubles, four homers and 17 RBI while scoring 21 runs and stealing six bases.

"I don't work with her much on her hitting," McQuillen said. "As a freshman, she was pretty solid. There's not much for me to improve on. She gets overaggressive at times, but other than that, she's one of the players you don't have to spend much time on. Even if you turn your back, she's doing what you asked. She started hitting the other way this year, too."

Hyatt credits her hitting prowess to her experience in travel ball, in which she regularly faces top-notch pitching.

"We don't see slow pitching, we see pitchers who throw as hard or harder than most county pitchers," Hyatt said. "When you're used to it, it helps."

McQuillen said Hyatt committed only three errors at short all season.

"She's pretty much automatic," McQuillen said. "When the ball's hit to her, I don't worry. She's not only athletic, but she's constantly thinking ahead. She's got the smarts to play the game."
