Whitney's HR sinks Suns

June 09, 2007

EASTLAKE, Ohio - Matthew Whitney hit a two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday night, lifting the Lake County Captains to a 5-4 victory over the Hagerstown Suns in a game the Suns led 4-0 through four innings.

Suns reliever Josh Wilkie, who came on with one out in the seventh, gave up a double to Jason Denham to start the ninth. Wilkie struck out Adam Davis and induced Matt McBride to hit a fielder's choice grounder to shortstop Mike Martinez, who threw to third to get Denham trying to advance a base, taking away a chance for Whitney to hit with the tying in scoring position.

No problem. Whitney homered to right to finish the Captains' rally and thwart the Suns.

Hagerstown (24-36) took a 3-0 lead in the second on Jhonatan Solano's three-run homer, and made it 4-0 in the fourth on Alex Nunez's homer.

Lake County (29-31) cut the lead to 4-2 in the fifth off Suns starter Jhonny Nunez. Denham ripped a solo homer, Adam Davis tripled and McBride drove Davis in with a double.

The Captains got within a run in the seventh on Roman Pena's RBI single.

The Suns and Captains will play the third game of their four-game series tonight. Hagerstown returns home for a seven-game homestand June 11-17.
