Belt comes up short, finishes 11th in NCAA high jump

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Louisville sophomore Tone Belt, a Berkeley Springs graduate, finished in a three-way tie for 11th place in the men's long jump final at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday.

Belt cleared his first attempt at 7 feet, 1/4 inch before missing three times at 7-1 1/2 to be eliminated from the final round of 16 competitors. Scott Sellers of Kansas State won the national title with a leap of 7-7 1/4.

Belt finished second in the long jump final on Thursday.

Belt won an NCAA Indoor title in the long jump this winter. He was fifth in both the long jump and high jump in the outdoor national meet last year as a freshman.

Rotz dips to second

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - Chambersburg's Clayton Rotz had an up-and-down day during the second round of the 54th Sunnehanna Amateur Tournament of Champions, but he was able to remain in solid contention at the halfway point.

Rotz shot an even-par 70 over the 6,868-yard Sunnehanna Country Club course and was one shot behind Rickie Fowler, of Murrieta, Calif., with a two-day total of 4-under 136.

Rotz was 3-over after five holes before four birdies over the next six holes moved him to 1-under. He had two late bogies before a birdie on the 18th hole.

Play continues today and Sunday.

Grier strugles in Indiana

HAMMOND, Ind. - Hagerstown's Ashley Grier opened with a 6-over-par 78 in the opening round of the 54-hole United States Steel Golf Classic at Lost Marsh Golf Course on the DuramedFUTURES Golf Tour on Friday.

Grier had a 40 on the front nine with three bogies and a double bogey. A 38 on the back nine included two bogies. She had one birdie on the day.

The first-round leader is Angela Buzminski with a 1-under 71.

WCJFL holds clinic

The Washington County Junior Football League will conduct two clinics for players in third through eighth grade.

The clinics will be today from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and Sunday from 1-5 p.m.

Julius Campbell, who was a member of the 1971 T.J. Williams team chronicled in the movie "Remember the Titans" will attend Sunday's clinic.

Chambersburg YMCA programs

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Chambersburg YMCA is offering a number of fitness programs for the summer.

A Walk Fit & Strong class will begin Monday at 7 p.m., along with a Boot Camp at 6 p.m. The boot camp will also be offered at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, along with a number of other fitness classes.
