More than 200 craftspeople to gather for Mountain Heritage festival

June 07, 2007|by TIFFANY ARNOLD

JEFFERSON COUNTY, W.Va. - Needing a pair of earrings to go with one of her outfits is often enough to motivate jewelry maker Mona Kissel.

For dulcimer maker Sam Rizzetta, it's the feel of the wood and the sound of the instrument.

Part of the payoff for all that creative energy, Rizzetta and Kissel say, is knowing their one-of-a-kind wares will make someone happy.

This weekend, Rizzetta and Kissel - who are both from southern Berkeley County - will see some of that payoff.

They'll be among more than 200 craft vendors at the juried, three-day spring Mountain Heritage Arts & Crafts Festival at the festival grounds on Job Corps Road between W.Va. 17 and W.Va. 230.

The event, sponsored by the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, starts Friday and runs through Sunday. The craft festival is held twice a year - in the spring and fall.

Not only will vendors be selling their goods at the craft fest, but they'll also be providing demonstrations.

"I'll be teaching people how to play," said Rizzetta, who's been making dulcimers since the late '60s.

Rizzetta said he's been showing work at the festival since the '70s.

Kissel, who got her start making jewelry in the '90s, said she'll be demonstrating a technique in which she blends different colors of polymer clay using a pasta maker.

Kissel said this year will mark her fifth appearance at the festival. She attended the fall Mountain Heritage Arts & Crafts Festival four times and plans be at the fall festival in September.

"Last year, I had people from (the previous) September looking for my booth," Kissel said. "That was pretty exciting."
