Belt in NCAA long jump final



SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Louisville sophomore Tone Belt, a 2005 Berkeley Springs graduate, long jumped 25 feet, 2 1/2 inches Wednesday at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships to qualify for today's finals in the event.

Belt, the reigning NCAA indoor champion in the long jump, finished third in the preliminaries.

He also competed in the high jump preliminaries Wednesday night. Those results were unavailable when The Morning Herald went to press. The high jump finals are Friday.

Penn State senior Allen Pettner, a graduate of James Buchanan and Hagerstown Community College, failed to qualify for the finals in the javelin. He finished 16th out of 26 in Wednesday's preliminaries with a throw of 207-8. Only the top 12 advanced.

Four Steelers coming to Valley Mall

Pittsburgh Steelers linebackers James Harrison and Larry Foote and safeties Anthony Smith and Ryan Clark will meet fans and sign autographs at the Valley Mall's Center Court on June 16.

Smith and Clark will be on hand from noon to 2 p.m., and Harrison and Foote will appear from 2 to 4 p.m. Autographs will be signed for $20 per item signed. The Valley Mall is hosting a sports card and collectibles show June 15-17.

Greencastle Flyers

The Greencastle Flyers Summer Track Meet Series will feature meets on June 14 and 21 and July 12 and 19 at Greencastle-Antrim High School. Registration for each meet begins at 4:45 p.m., with events starting at 5:15. Cost is $2 per event. Pole vaulters and throwers should bring their own equipment.
