ROCKVILLE, Md. - Clayton Rotz would like to have done in his first 18 holes what he did in his second 18 on Monday at Woodmont Country Club as one of 65 players vying for five spots out of qualifying play for next week's U.S. Open.

Rotz, of Chambersburg, Pa., shot a 3-under par-69 in his afternoon round, a far improvement over the morning round of 6-over 78. His 36-hole total of 147 left him out of contention for one of the spots in the Open at Oakmont Country Club on June 11-14.

"I was in the bunkers 11 times in the first round," said Rotz, part of the reason he opened the first nine with a 41. "I had plugged lies and long shots out."

Starting on the back nine in the second round, Rotz carded three straight birdies to finish the first nine.

"I got some things straightened out on my downswing and my putter was hot in the second round," said Rotz. "All my birdies, I had putts of more than 20 feet."

Steve Caron, of Waynesboro, Pa., shot a 36-hole total of 152, the same as he did last year at Woodmont. Monday, Caron had rounds of 78 and 74.

"I had even-par 36 on the front nine in each round, but everything was really off, nothing really worked," said Caron.

PGA Tour veteran Joey Sindelar led the field with 69-69-138.

"Sindelar and (Brad) Faxon each had 69 in their final round and I did too and that's kinda cool," said Rotz.
