This month, more than a thousand local cancer survivors and their loved ones are pledging to walk for a cause - curing and preventing cancer.

Relay for Life is a yearly American Cancer Society event for which cancer survivors and their loved ones walk laps to honor cancer survivors and raise money for cancer research.

Several area American Cancer Society offices will host relays throughout the month: in Hagerstown, June 8 and 9; Shippensburg, June 9 and 10; Scotland, Pa., and Shenandoah Junction, W.Va., June 22 and 23.

Combined, those four events raised a little more than $351,000 last year, local ACS officials said. Nationally, the event raised $375 million, said Becky Steinmark, spokeswoman for the national American Cancer Society.

In 2003 - the most recent year for which data is available - 1.3 million people were diagnosed with cancer in the U.S., and 556,890 of those people died that same year, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
