Pa. man dies in Deep Creek Lake

June 04, 2007

McHENRY, Md. - A 20-year-old Greencastle, Pa., man drowned Friday after he jumped from the U.S. 219 bridge in to Deep Creek Lake, according to a Maryland State Police press release.

Jonathan McDaniel Witter jumped into the Garrett County lake at about 1:15 p.m. along with William Ray Gates, 26, also of Greencastle, police said.

Gates was unsuccessful in his efforts to help Witter, who went under the water while trying to swim to shore, police said. Gates flagged down a Natural Resources Police boat, and officers summoned help from other agencies, including the Maryland State Police.

Witter's body was found about an hour later about 50 feet under water, police said.
