Airport to get DOT funding for runway

June 02, 2007|By ANDREW SCHOTZ

A $61 million runway-extension project at Hagerstown Regional Airport will get more federal money this year than first expected.

U.S. Senators Benjamin L. Cardin and Barbara A. Mikulski announced Friday that the U.S. Department of Transportation had awarded $7.3 million for the project this year.

Phil Ridenour, the airport's fire chief, who is familiar with the project, said the total amount, including a separate $150,000 grant, actually was $7.5 million.

The county expected to receive $6 million this year, he said, but successfully lobbied for $1.5 million more to cover the rising costs of asphalt, copper and other materials.
