Two charged in drive-by shooting

June 01, 2007

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Two men have been charged in a May 20 drive-by shooting in the 400 block of West Catherine Street, according to Chambersburg police and Magisterial District Justice Todd Williams' office.

Matthew W. Stoner, 19, address unavailable, of Chambersburg, was charged Wednesday with discharge of a firearm into an occupied structure, criminal conspiracy, terroristic threats and recklessly endangering another person, police said. The same charges in the same incident were filed in Williams' office against Brandon K. Vazquez, 19, of 510 Doubling Gap Road in Newville, Pa.

The Chambersburg police affidavit of probable cause against Vazquez stated that two shots were fired from a "long gun" into 404 W. Catherine St. on May 20 at 7:21 p.m. A white male and a black male were seen leaving the scene in a green Dodge truck, police said.

Zulma Rivera of 404 W. Catherine St. told police she was sitting in her living room when the shots were fired, and she believed the incident was related to a fight her son had been involved in earlier.

Jose Rivera said he was with friends earlier when they were approached by a black male known to him as "Duke" and an unknown white male, police said. The fight broke out after the white male "demanded weed," police said.

After the fight, the two men left in the truck, yelling that they would be back. Rivera had left the area before the shots were fired into his mother's house, police said.

Three days after the shooting, a man came forward and with information about the identities of the two men involved in the shooting, which led them to Vazquez and Stoner, police said.
