Hicks musicians rated superior

May 30, 2007

The E. Russell Hicks Middle School Band, under the direction of Michele Hull and Betty Sue Kitchen, was the only middle school band in the county to earn a superior rating at the Washington County Large Ensemble Adjudication Festival on March 30 at North Hagerstown High School.

Bands receiving a superior rating were invited to participate at the State Band Festival on May 3 at Clarksburg (Md.) High School in Montgomery County. The band received an excellent rating at the state festival. A total of 36 middle school bands from across the state participated.

In addition to the eighth-grade band attending the State Band Festival, 11 members of the seventh- and eighth-grade bands earned a superior rating, also through adjudication, and were invited to attend the State Solo & Ensemble Festival on May 12 at Towson (Md.) University.

Amber Carlin-Brown, Carissa Funk, Kelsey Lucas, Stephanie Swope and Melanie Keller received superior ratings, while Morgan McCarley, Myshake Abdi, Ryan Stewart, Shawnie Shawyer, Matt Koebel, Melaine Keller and Alex Brogaard received excellent ratings.

The final performances of the year will take place today and Thursday at 7 p.m. at E. Russell Hicks Middle School. The sixth- and seventh-grade bands will perform today, and the jazz and eighth-grade bands will perform Thursday.
