Health department names employee of the month

Sandra Walter has been named the Washington County Health Department's Employee of the Month for May.

Walter has been employed at the health department since 1988 and during that time has worked in the agency's public health education, public relations and community outreach programs. In each of these positions, she was instrumental in the development and publication of educational documents detailing the functions of the health department's various programs.

She works with the Administration Division where she helps the direct service provision programs with fleet management.

Nurse of the year named at Shook

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -Donna Shaffer, licensed practical nurse at The Shook Home, a continuing care retirement community in Chambersburg, was chosen as Nurse of the Year. The Nurse of the Year award is a part of the facility's weeklong celebration of National Nurses Day and National Nursing Home Week. Shaffer was nominated by her peers and selected by a committee of employees from the skilled nursing center for this honor.


Shaffer was a certified nurse aide at The Shook Home before she left temporarily to return to school at Wilson College to work on her degree in nursing. Her total employment time at The Shook Home has been three years.

Other nominees were Marissa Erhart, Deana Wiley and Barb Wissinger.

Shaffer lives in Fayetteville with her two children.
