Suns host second annual 'Pitching Pink' celebration

May 24, 2007

Municipal Stadium hosted many mothers, fundraisers and breast cancer awareness programs on Mother's Day weekend.

The second annual "Pitching Pink" celebration was expanded from a one-day campaign in 2006 to a full weekend this year. More than 6,300 fans attended games over Mother's Day weekend, and the Hagerstown Suns raised $3,707 to be donated to Breast Cancer Awareness-Cumberland Valley (BCA-CV).

Lite 95.7 FM, The Real Red Barron, Phoenix Color and Associated Radiologists were sponsors of the "Pitching Pink" weekend. Y2Knit was present all three days, and donated three knitted blankets that were raffled during the weekend.

The weekend began Friday night with the Suns' first Friday night fireworks show of the season. The Suns held their second annual "Shirt Off Our Backs" pink jersey auction on Saturday night. Suns players wore pink jerseys during the game as a silent auction of their game-worn jerseys occurred simultaneously. Twenty-nine jerseys and one pink team-autographed, game-used base were auctioned.

On Sunday, the first 1,000 fans received a white cap with a pink Suns logo and breast cancer awareness ribbon embroidered. Sunday marked the end of a month-long promotion where the Suns sold breast cancer awareness ribbons for $1 each. In total, the Suns raised $461 through this portion of the breast cancer awareness campaign.

Anyone interested in participating in the BCA-CV free mammogram program may call the BCA-CV office at 301-791-5843. Those fitting the BCA-CV guidelines who have their mammograms done through the program will receive a $20 Wal-Mart gift card.

The Suns are a Class A South Atlantic League affiliate of the Washington Nationals.
