Freon recycling offered

May 23, 2007

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Berkeley County residents can take part in a free, freon unit recycling event under way this month at two county Solid Waste Authority-run drop-off sites.

During May, at no cost to residents, the Solid Waste Authority's South Berkeley and Grapevine Road recycling centers will accept all metal household appliances of any age, manufacture or condition, such as dryers, washing machines and water heaters for recycling.

Consumer-grade items that contain freon, such as air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers and dehumidifiers also will be accepted.

The units must have all foreign items such as food waste removed and each unit will be inspected by the recycling center staff. The Solid Waste Authority reserves the right to reject any unit not considered acceptable.

For more information, call the agency's office at 304-267-9370; the Berkeley County Recycling Hotline at 304-671-2925; or send e-mail to berkeleycountyswa@msn.com.
