DILLSBURG, Pa. - Rusty Cordell scored the winning run on an error in the eighth inning Monday as Greencastle-Antrim edged York Suburban 2-1 in the first round of the PIAA District 3 Class AAA first-round playoffs.

The Blue Devils (14-7) face Gettysburg in the quarterfinals Thursday at a site and time to be determined.

The game had been a pitchers' duel, with Greencastle starter Bryan Bennett going 6 2/3 innings. He allowed two hits and struck out five.

Greencastle, which had only five hits, scored its first run as Jeff Fisher tripled and came home on Drew Bittner's RBI fielder's choice.


Maryland Region I championships

FREDERICK, Md. - Smithsburg singles players David Kurz and Carrie Martin, the Leopards' girls doubles team of Mia Doyle and Tessa Doyle and their mixed-doubles team of Misbah Shafi and Jon Vich each placed at the Maryland Region I championships over the weekend, but fell short of qualifying for states.


Kurz defeated Williamsport's Patrick Stahel for third place, while Williamsport's mixed-doubles team of Brendan Benisek and Amy Matonak defeated Vich and Shafi for third. The Doyles finished third in the girls doubles and Martin finished fourth in the girls singles.

Gretchen Schoeck and Otto Schoeck of North Hagerstown were both eliminated in the first round of singles competition.

Walkersville's David Lupinetti and Thomas Johnson's Bethany Springer took the singles titles. Jack Reickel and Tim Gower of Walkersville won the boys doubles and TJ's Stacey Niehoff and Kathy Zoulias won the girls doubles. Middletown's Tom Maerz and Emily Maerz won the mixed doubles.
