You Said It

May 21, 2007

"Hooray for the mayor and council of Williamsport for starting to see that they can't give free utilities to the Little League. (The league) charges fees for signing up and fees for the concession stand. So the league should have the money."

- Williamsport

"The summary budget is on the home page of the county government's Web site. The budget hearing is May 22. If you care about how the county collects and spends your money, I'll see you there."

- Rohrersville

"I must congratulate the Boonsboro High School 'We the People' team for becoming the first public school to represent Maryland in the national competition of knowledge of our Constitution! I am not surprised that they also acted properly by sending me a thank-you letter for my minor monetary contribution to their trip to Washington. I am proud that my local high school excels in academics as well as manners."

"How would you feel if you're standing beside Prince Harry and they yell out that Prince Harry is not going to Iraq because it is too dangerous, but all the rest of you get ready, because you're going?"

- Clear Spring

"This is in response to the caller about how it's possible for al-Qaeda to be responsible for capturing three American soldiers in Iraq when the Democrats have been saying al-Qaeda is not and has never been in Iraq. The Democrats are not saying that. You people always twist everything around. There was no al-Qaeda when we invaded them. Since then, there's thousands of them over there. Stop twisting stuff around and putting stuff in there that's not true. Democrats never said that al-Qaeda isn't in Iraq now. We all know they are."

- Hagerstown

"I know my fellow teachers feel the same way, but I wanted to personally thank the parents and PTA of Boonsboro Elementary School for putting together such a wonderful and successful teachers' appreciation week. The parents' and the PTA's hard work in organizing, soliciting and arranging the goodies and meals for us did not go unnoticed. Thank you, parents and PTA of the Boonsboro Elementary School. You're the best."

- Boonsboro

"I didn't realize there were so many drugs in Boonsboro until I started reading the paper about the arrests for drug use - especially among the newer developments."

- Boonsboro

"Enough is enough. I'm on Social Security, and if these rates go up any more I won't be able to afford to flush the toilet."

- Hagerstown

"I'm calling about the 'officers honored for action in the face of risk'. I thought The Herald-Mail printed something about they were going to have a ceremony for officers who have fallen in the line of duty. I was just curious; is 1975 the last year that we've actually had an officer pass or die in the line of duty? Because if that's the case, then I don't understand why you would have a ceremony for fallen officers if you haven't had any. It should be called something else, like a ceremony to reward officers. It just doesn't make sense to me if you're gonna have a ceremony like that and we haven't had one in 20-some years."

- Hagerstown

"You know this country has their priorities wrong when the lead-in story for the 'Today' show, a news program, is about who got kicked off of 'American Idol' the night before. That's sad, sad, sad that that's the most important thing we have in this country."

- Williamsport

"I read in the paper about the roads in southern Washington County being so bad, including Mansfield Road. We visited the battlefield last week. We came out the back way, we had two choices - either a dirt road or Mansfield Road. We came out Mansfield Road, but after coming over it, I wish I would have taken the dirt road. What a disgrace to have a road like that leading to a national battlefield."

- Boonsboro

"Morning Herald, May 17 - good article about the young man returning home, Mr. Steelman, out on the Dual Highway at Martin's. Martin's should be congratulated, and all the other people. Welcome back home, Nathan. You did a good job, and we're all proud of all of you over there."

- Chewsville

"I'd like to complain about the county commissioners not lowering the tax rate this coming tax season. With all the growth that's in this county and all the so-called impact fees that have been taking place and they're collecting, I see no reason why they cannot lower the constant yield tax rate for the citizens of Washington County and Hagerstown. This is totally ridiculous, and I hope the people remember these commissioners also when it comes election time."

- Hagerstown

"I want to say 'Boo' to the city councilmen, or council people, I should say, City of Hagerstown, for raising our water rates again. I live right outside the city limits in the county, and I'm expecting a higher water bill again. So much for moving out in the county, getting away from city bills and city taxes."
