Input sought on redistricting of Washington County Public Schools

May 21, 2007|by ERIN CUNNINGHAM

HAGERSTOWN - The final two of four planned public meetings about redistricting of Washington County Public Schools will be held this week and next.

The meetings, which began in April, have been used to gather input from families affected by a new proposed school attendance zone for Rockland Woods Elementary School. The school, being built in the Westfields development south of Hagerstown, is set to open in 2008, along with replacement schools for Maugansville and Pangborn elementary schools.

Officials have said redistricting will be necessary to fill the new school and to relieve overcrowding in other schools.

A public meeting tonight at South Hagerstown High School will focus on the realignment of existing attendance zones and programs affected by creating a new attendance zone for Rockland Woods. The meeting, which begins at 6:30 p.m. will be for those likely affected by or interested in the proposed boundary realignments of Emma K. Doub, Funkstown, Lincolnshire, Bester and Eastern elementary schools.

The fourth meeting will focus on boundary realignments relating to the opening of the replacement school for Maugansville Elementary. Officials have said the boundary for Pangborn Elementary would likely remain the same.

That meeting will be May 29 at North Hagerstown High School for those affected by or interested in the proposed boundary realignments of Conococheague, Maugansville and Paramount elementary schools.

The facilities and enrollment advisory committee has been meeting to discuss redistricting, and members said they hope to present their recommendations to the Washington County Board of Education in July.

The proposed boundaries for Rockland Woods Elementary School were changed during a committee meeting May 10.
