SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - A crash involving a UPS truck and an all-terrain vehicle killed a 21-year-old Shippensburg man and seriously injured his passenger over the weekend, according to a press release from Pennsylvania State Police in Chambersburg.
Police said Leigh D. Martin was driving a Yamaha all-terrain vehicle that lost control and hit a UPS truck at 3:21 p.m. Friday in the 1600 block of Rowe Road in Southampton Township.
Police said the Yamaha hit the driver's side rear of a UPS truck parked in the northbound lane, and the all-terrain vehicle turned clockwise, coming to rest in the southbound lane facing south. Martin was thrown into the truck, while his passenger, 18-year-old Stephen Xereas, of Shippensburg, landed in the road.
Martin was pronounced dead after being taken to Chambersburg Hospital, police said.
A hospital spokeswoman said Xereas was in critical condition Sunday at Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center.
The Yamaha left a 22-foot skid mark before hitting the UPS truck, which did not move. The truck had its four-way hazard lights on, police said.
